The Pre-Rain Gutter Checklist for Fresno & Clovis Homes

Here’s the thing about gutters in the Central Valley: they sit unused through our long dry summer, slowly filling with leaves, dust and grit — and then the first real rains arrive and ask them to work hard, immediately. Gutters that are packed solid don’t drain, and that’s when the damage starts.
A little prep before the wet season saves a lot of headaches. Run through this checklist (or have us handle it).
Why timing matters out here
Fall leaf drop and the first storms tend to overlap. If your gutters are already full when the rain comes, water overflows the edges and runs where it shouldn’t — down your siding, behind the fascia, and pooling against the foundation. The fix is simple: clear them before the season, not after the first leak.
The checklist
- Clear the debris. Scoop out leaves, twigs, roof grit and the dust that’s settled all summer.
- Flush the downspouts. A clear gutter still won’t drain if the downspout is blocked — run water through to confirm.
- Check the slope. Water should run toward the downspouts, not pool in the middle.
- Look for sagging or pulling. Heavy debris can loosen brackets; catch it before a section gives way.
- Inspect the fascia and seams for early signs of rot or leaks.
What clogged gutters actually cost
Overflowing gutters are one of the most common causes of expensive home damage — foundation issues, fascia rot, stained siding, and roof leaks. Compared to those repairs, a seasonal cleaning is cheap insurance.
